Ragas by the River is an annual classical music festival hosted at RiverView Retreat in Corbett, Uttarakhand, with hospitality by Taj Resort & Spa. Held annually in the month of March, the spring landscape of Corbett, brings together renowned Indian classical musicians, immersive natural surroundings and a deliberately restrained festival atmosphere focused on listening rather than spectacle.
There are festivals you attend, and then there are festivals you experience. Ragas by the River 2026 belonged firmly to the latter.
Set against the quiet, watchful wilderness of Corbett, the third season of this evolving classical music gathering unfolded with a rare sense of intent. Not spectacle, not noise but depth. As Director of Photography for the festival, I wasn’t merely documenting performances; I was observing how sound reshapes space, how light behaves around music, and how audiences respond when art is allowed to breathe.

The team at Photosynthesis Photography Services approached the festival with a documentary perspective, focusing not only on performances but also on the quieter transitions, interactions and atmosphere surrounding the event.

Having documented the previous two editions of Ragas by the River as well, returning to Corbett this year brought a different sense of familiarity. Certain rhythms felt recognizable, but the atmosphere of the 2026 edition carried its own distinct pace, energy and visual identity.

A Festival That Understands Restraint
Unlike most large-scale events that rely on excess, Ragas by the River operates with remarkable restraint. The stage does not overpower the surroundings; it coexists with them. The river hums quietly in the background, the air carries a certain stillness, and the music fills that silence with precision.

From a visual standpoint, this creates a rare challenge.

As a wedding photographer and cinematographer accustomed to dynamic environments, I am often working with movement, chaos, and fleeting emotion. Here, however, the frame demanded patience. The compositions had to respect stillness. Every shot had to feel as deliberate as the music itself.
The Line-Up: Tradition Without Compromise
Season 3 brought together an extraordinary roster of artists:
The 2026 edition brought together musicians whose styles ranged from deeply traditional classical expression to more contemporary interpretations, yet the festival maintained a remarkably cohesive atmosphere throughout.

- Ustad Amjad Ali Khan
- Amaan Ali Bangash
- Ayaan Ali Bangash
- Ustad Shahid Parvez
- Shakir Khan
- Hariharan
- Taufiq Qureshi
- Purbayan Chatterjee
- Rakesh Chaurasia
- Kaushiki Chakraborty
- Prithvi Gandharv
- Meenal Jain
- Armaan Khan
- Kutle Khan
- A26 (Goa) – closing with a contemporary after-party set
What stood out was not just the stature of the artists, but the continuity of mood across performances. There was no rush to transition, no forced energy shifts. Each performance was allowed to settle, to linger, and to dissolve naturally into the next.

Filming Music Is Not About Movement
One of the most common misconceptions in event cinematography is that movement equals engagement. At Ragas by the River, the opposite was true.

The most powerful frames were often static.
A single beam of light on the stage
A pause between notes.
An audience leaning forward, not moving, just listening.

As the DoP, my role extended beyond capturing visuals. It involved interpreting rhythm visually. The edits are slower, the camera movements more restrained, and the lighting decisions more intentional than any wedding or commercial project.

Experience across disciplines becomes valuable. Whether it is candid wedding photography in Faridabad, Delhi NCR or documenting a classical performance in Corbett, the underlying principle remains the same: You don’t impose a visual language; you discover it within the moment! This approach closely mirrors the way we document emotionally layered wedding celebrations across Delhi NCR and destination venues.

Production, Control and Cohesion
Beyond visuals, our team at Photosynthesis Photography Services was responsible for:

- Visual consistency across stages
- Real-time content creation
- Social media delivery

As Director of Photography for the festival, the role extended beyond documentation into maintaining a cohesive visual narrative across performances, audience interactions and the evolving atmosphere of the event. Every frame, transition and delivery decision had to support the slower, immersive rhythm that defines Ragas by the River.

Managing visual storytelling at a live classical music festival of this scale requires a different kind of discipline. Unlike weddings, where moments peak frequently, here the narrative unfolds gradually. Content has to be curated, not rushed.

Every frame released. Whether on the website or social media, had to reflect the tone of the festival: refined, immersive, and quietly powerful.

The People Behind the Festival
At the heart of Ragas by the River is Vir Srivastava, the festival director – a trained Indian classical vocalist whose understanding of music is evident in every detail of the event.

Alongside him:
- Varun Srivastava, co-director, ensuring execution remains seamless
- Karam Srivastava, handling logistics with precision, while also bringing a photographer’s eye to the wilderness around
This is not just an event team. It is a group that understands both art and environment, and how the two must coexist.
Riverview Retreat, Corbett – A Setting That Matters
The choice of venue is not incidental.
Hosted at Riverview Retreat, Corbett, with hospitality by Taj Resort & Spa, the festival benefits from a location that enhances rather than distracts. The open spaces, the proximity to nature, and the absence of urban noise all contribute to the experience. The setting in Corbett, Uttarakhand contributes heavily to the identity of the festival itself
From a cinematography perspective, this allows for:

- natural light transitions
- atmospheric depth
- minimal artificial interference
Beyond Documentation: Interpreting a Festival

By the time the final performance closed, what remained was not just footage or photographs, but a layered understanding of the festival itself.
Ragas by the River is not trying to be large.
It is trying to be meaningful.
And that distinction shows in every frame.

For those who want to experience the festival visually – beyond words – we have been documenting and sharing moments in real time.

Closing Note
The 2026 edition marked another year of documenting the festival’s evolving visual language through photography, cinematography and real time storytelling across performances, artist interactions and the wider environment surrounding the event.

As someone who spends most of the year documenting weddings across Delhi NCR and destination locations, Ragas by the River offered something different. A reminder that storytelling is not always about capturing more, but about observing better. The 2026 edition marked another year of documenting the festival’s evolving visual language through photography, cinematography and real-time storytelling across performances, artist interactions and the wider environment surrounding the event.
